Continuing professional education/development is different from personal development, staff development or in-service education and training. Broadly speaking, continuing professional education encompasses all formal and informal learning that allows individuals to improve their own practice.

The former is mainly about occupational role development whereas personal development is the development of the person, often the 'whole' person, and almost always involves changes in self awareness.
